Our meat chicks come to our farm when they are cute, fluffy, and just a day old. They are kept in our homemade brooder for the next 2-3 weeks. When they are big enough to go outside, and the weather cooperates, we move them into portable chicken “tractors”. These tractors protect the smaller birds from predators while allowing them to be on pasture so they have fresh air to breathe, plenty of sunshine to soak up vitamin D, and an abundance of clover and bugs to eat. These tractors are moved twice a day. After a few weeks, we will open the tractors up and let the chickens wander the fields. The ability to roam around gives their meat a firmer texture, higher levels of Omega-3s and a lower fat content.
